Valores de la familia

This is a Spanish composition from Spanish 204. It's a reaction-type essay in response to a movie my class watched having to do with a family in Cuba.
This does not make a lot of sense because I needed to squeeze a lot of content into 215 words. I wrote about 270 words below, but I didn't want to go much more over the word limit!
Gattaca reactions

1. I would not mind using Gattaca’s selection method in choosing my child. While the child would be less a result of chance, the fact that I chose how I wanted my child to be would make the child closer to me, because he or she would resemble my vision. Disadvantages obviously exist, ranging from the moral debate over abortion and when life actually begins to the stress that could result from having to make a difficult choice or choices. In Gattaca, the parents were to choose the best of several already-developing embryos, and presumably the rest would be left to decompose. This would be highly objectionable to many people. It would not, however, be impractical because this already occurs to an extent with today’s “test tube babies.” Today, though, the goal is more geared towards selecting a bunch of cells that are actually developing, than selecting the cells with the best genetic makeup. 4. I think knowing a child’s...Grammar journal one

To: Mr. Roskom From: Charlie Gorichanaz Date: September 5, 2005 Re: Journal #1 This weekend was quite exciting actually. I finally completed my move to Menomonee Falls! Now I don’t have to drive home every night, which is 15 minutes north of West Bend. Not fun. Since I run my mom’s store in the Falls, this will work out well. Accompanied by my dear Eryn from our West Bend store, I went to Mayfair. She met me at the Falls store, so she could take my brother Tim home from the store, and so that I wouldn’t have to drive back to West Bend. Anyway, I only made one purchase today (and exchanged one item), which is much better than when I went a week ago and spent $200. Today I bought a sweatshirt from the Abercrombie kid’s store. It’s an extra-large in boy’s sizes, so it fits me perfectly! Yay! After my big purchase, Eryn and I were walking...Buy this

Companies Spend Billions on Marketing Campaigns, but Neuroscientists Could Someday Determine Which Ads Best Capture Consumers’ Attention This article discussed how emotions, herd instincts, and memories can influence our buying decisions. A German study showed that men, when viewing pictures of sports cars, as opposed to other cars, had high activity in the nucleus accumbens of the brain, which is the center for self-reward. Triggered by dopamine, it releases endogenous opiates – substances linked to lust and pleasure. This means that carmakers can design ads based on previous studies of variations, using the variations that caused the highest emotional response. Most of the tests used were done with fMRI, functional magnetic resonance imaging – which measures metabolism changes throughout the brain. Such tests were used in the Coke vs. Pepsi duel. Given blindly, each drink scored equally well. When people were told what they were drinking, the satisfaction center (ventral putamen) was still equal, but the medial prefrontal cortex was...FDR: A presidency revealed

The first 45 minutes or so of this documentary were mostly concerning the historical facts that are well known – and I was delighted that I knew much of it from chapter 34 in our text! It was amazing to me that I often guessed what the narrator was going to say next, simply because I read the book. A few points that I was not 100% aware of were: FDR was elected for a third time, not because the public approved of his past policies, but because he promised to keep the soldier out of the war with Adolph Hitler – a promise his wife Eleanor knew was not realistic, and FDR would later suffer from making that promise. FDR was elected the first time mainly because he wasn’t the incumbent. This is not to say that he wasn’t qualified, but the public would simply not re-elect a president that “led” them into the depression, even though Hoover...Cashier at age eleven

Just after my eleventh birthday, my mom started hauling my siblings and me to a strange building in West Bend - every day. For the first few days, I did not go inside, and had no idea what Mom was doing inside. Then one day, she announced that we were opening a dollar store. At that point, I had never even heard of a dollar store, so this was a big surprise. I wasn’t even aware of anyone I knew owning a store. Very cool. As the days went on, we started to get shipments. Lots of them. Within a week, over 10,000 boxes arrived, preceded by gondolas, grids, and other shelving units and fixtures. My step dad and some friends set up the shelves as my mother and I went though all of the boxes and invoices. I had never seen a mountain of boxes so high. It took just under a month to get the shelves stocked and...Syked over Cosby

Through means I am not at liberty to elaborate on, I had the opportunity to meet the sensational new comedian of Comedy Central, Wanda Sykes, the one and only. She had a show at The Riverside in Milwaukee in October, 2004, and her manager granted me a complimentary ticket to the show, and a backstage pass. About six people got to go backstage to meet Wanda, take a picture with her, get an autograph, and chat with the star. How special I am. Her show was absolutely hysterical, and she even took a few cracks at President Bush’s proposed constitutional amendment to ban me from equal taxation and equal treatment under the law. Go Wanda! In back after the show, I was surprised to see how short Ms. Sykes really is. She looks much bigger on television. Her mannerisms and personality was very accommodating, which pleased me – especially since she can be so cruel on her show “Wanda Does...Interview responses on homosexuality for school paper

1. I believe that being gay is at least partially predetermined by genetics, so I’ve been gay for about 16 years now. As for realizing when one is gay, that is more complicated. I have been absolutely sure that I am gay for at least a year. Before that, I had suspicions…and I slowly became aware of what it all meant. Living in a world in which homosexuality was never mentioned, except to poke fun at “gays,” I never really thought about my sexuality. I assumed that I liked girls, because that’s how it’s supposed to be. Over the years, I had a couple of experiences with other boys, but never did I even consider that I might be gay. The topic was so taboo for children to think about…now that I think about it, I have no idea what the heck I thought I was doing with those boys…anyway. It really came down to a simple fact: Guys turned...Memories for graduation from gradeschool

May 9th, 2002 Memories for Graduation First Grade We were playing some game involving running around. My shoes were not tied, and of course I had to trip and fall. My head slammed into the corner of a desk, and my eyebrow started bleeding. I got a tissue and held it to my head, hiding under the cover of my desk. I don’t remember very well what happened after that, but somebody told Mrs. Enders and she had my mom called. She picked my up and we went to the doctor. I had to get three stitches. I had Taco Bell for lunch so it all turned out good. Second Grade Mrs. Gurlusky used to play the piano for us, and we would sing songs like the song with the tree and the hole. Third Grad No memorable memories Fourth Grade Mrs. Jeockes was a first time teacher. For the beginning of school, we had to bring a sack with...Letter to a semenary student

Dear Sean Granger, My name is Charlie Gorichanaz, and I attend St. Hubert Catholic School in Hubertus, Wisconsin. I would like to thank you for answering God’s call and becoming a minister of the faith. Although it may not seem like it, it does mean a lot to me. I always hear about how there is a vast and worldwide shortage of priests. That makes me feel pretty helpless because I am only thirteen years old. But I do what I can, such as helping teach seniors about computers and tutor at my school. I also do some service activities like serving at St. Ben’s in Milwaukee and participating in the five-mile walk. I do not think I am going to become a priest ever, but you never know. Once again, thanks for becoming a priest in this time of need! My class has recently been studying vocations since this is vocations week. I have a few questions I would...The structure of the school day at St. Hubert School

The school day at St. Hubert School Junior High is very different from elementary school. In this essay, I will discuss the similarities and differences between elementary school and junior high. In elementary school, you keep all of your supplies and books in the room at your desks. All of your classes are in the same room for the most part, and the same teacher instructs all of the main classes such as English, Math, Science, History, and so on. On the other hand, junior high is very different. One good thing is, after homeroom (the time between 8:00 and 8:20 when you are in your main room), we start with two classes, and then we enjoy a five-minute break! After that we have two more classes. Then come lunch and recess, two classes, another five-minute break, and the last two classes. At 3:05, we go back to our homeroom, pray, and are dismissed. Another difference is, in junior high,...Summary of a boy scout trip

Summer Vacation “Are we there yet,” I mumbled, bored and excited about going to Michigan. “Nope. Three more hours!” Said Mr. Herro, the driver. “Great…” I replied. We were on our way to Mark’s Uncle’s land in Michigan. There weren’t many people coming this time. Mark and I were the only scouts from our patrol that were coming. Mr. Herro had plans of activities to do along the lines of rank advancement. The only thing we did was swimming tests for those who were not First-Class yet. It was mostly the current sixth graders. They had to swim from shore around the raft and back, and float on their backs and do certain stokes, etcetera. Mark and I were appointed “Lifeguards.” How nice. We both thought it was boring, and it was. Every time “they” wanted to take a swim, Mark and I had to get ready and swim out. Then we had to put up with J.B., Justin, Zach...Cause-effect letter

Dear Mr. Chavonic, Can you imagine being a student at some school…a school that was always so scorching in the summer that you need a drink every five minutes else you would dehydrate? So sizzling all you can think about is how long it will be until you can go home? So blisteringly hot you would wish there was no dress code…? Sometimes you would wish you could just jump into a chilly, arctic, freezing, icy, frosty, bitter cold pool filled with ice-cold water that is negative one million degrees! Well there is a school like that. St. Hubert School. Okay… maybe I was exaggerating a bit, but the point is… We need air conditioning! In the summer it can get pretty warm in the school. The cooling system is not sufficient enough to keep the building cool. Because of this, students must be excused to get drinks from the bubbler much more often than necessary. Sometimes the heat can...Kid's day haunted house flyer

September 11, 2001 To: Charlie N. Gorichanaz of May 2001 Dear Charlie, What you are reading are the words of a good friend of mine. Maybe you do not remember him, for he’s grown a great deal since he has written this letter, mentally, physically, and spiritually. He is just starting his eighth grade year at St. Hubert School. Here is a peek at what he has to say… “Right now school is getting a bit tougher, but the past few days I haven’t had too much homework. I am pretty worried about my term paper and book reports, because they seem so big! I hope I do a good job on them, so I better start my book, The Golden Compass, so I can get a good start. This school year seems better than everyone anticipated. The new principal is really good and has some neat ideas. The new language teacher is a bit strict, but she is a...Rock playbill - weird assignment

Charlie Gorichanaz #7 History page 436 Discussing Main Ideas 1-5 Thinking About History Discussing Main Ideas 1. In April 1860, the Democrats held meetings for nominating presidential candidates. Some of them had different views on slavery than the others. These disagreements caused the Democrats to split up. Lincoln won the election with 180 electoral votes. This stunned the South, since Lincoln was not on Southern ballots. The South thought that this was going to be a threat to their interests, since for previous presidents, the South had a great influence. 2. Social and cultural differences divided the North and the South. North ministers attacked slavery while South spoke for it. Some churches split into Southern and Northern branches. South and North tried not to rely on each other for anything if possible. Northerners believed in hard work and thrift. They saw Southerners as lazy. The South disagreed and saw North as money-grubbing liars. 3. The Southern Constitution was based on...Lynx project
